I would like to thank those residents who provided feedback last year in September about the design of the new bike jump track.

As part of the consultation several suggestions and questions were raised about the design.  Council have now considered the feedback from residents and provided clarification.  Please see Council’s responses below:

  • Minor track adjustment: Beginner track: Removing a set of triple rollers with berm exits to a 1.5m – 2m tabletop section.
    • The design has been amended to include this request.
  • Minor track adjustment: Advanced track: Altering the 2m high 5m long left hip jump to a 2m high 3m long left hip jump
    • This has not been amended in the design, as there are 3m table tops in the intermediate track, therefore a 2m high 5m long left hip jump is a natural progression from intermediate to advanced, ensuring the track remains suitable for all ages and abilities.
  • Major track adjustment: Asphalt track: At this stage, there is no consideration for the track to be converted into an asphalt pump track. It will remain compacted soil.
  • Zoning: Salisbury Recreation Reserve is zoned as a District General Outdoor Sport parkland servicing users Brisbane Wide. Under the Brisbane City Plan 2014, BMX tracks are considered an acceptable embellishment in District General Outdoor Sport parkland.
  • Privacy / Noise
    • The BMX has a 33m set back from the rear fences of the Allendale Street residences.
    • Extra vegetation along this frontage can be considered in the scope, however it is difficult to pre-emptively understand what impact this would have on privacy/noise prior to the track being utilised.
  • Additional seating, shelter, bins, toilets, water fountain (public facilities)
    • The inclusion of extra waste facilities (bins), shade (shelters) and seating are currently being considered as inclusions to the project, either to be delivered in conjunction with the track, or as a staged approach. Public toilets are located approximately 300m from the track, directional signage can be installed at the BMX track advising users.
    • There is a water fountain installed ~280m at the Ainsworth Street playground.
  • Lighting of the jump track
    • There are no inclusions to provide lighting for the track.
  • Anti-social behaviour
    • As the track has not yet been built, pre-emptively commenting on how we intend on mitigating anti-social behaviour is not possible. However, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) measures will be incorporated during the design phase.
  • Parking
    • 80 car spaces are currently provided within the Salisbury Recreation Reserve Parkland on the Allandale Street frontage, accessible to members of the public accessing the BMX track.
  • Is the proposed track intended for regular bicycles or motorbikes?
    • The dirt bike jump track will only be for use of non-motorised bicycles only.
  • Pathways
    • The 24m set back of the BMX track will allow for adequate open green space for accessibility, without having users walk through the BMX track site.
  • Disturbing Land:
    • Contaminated Land: We are taking the necessary precautions to ensure that no excavation occurs without first investigating any potential contamination, especially on old landfill sites. We are working with environmental officers and authorities to ensure compliance.
    • Filling: All filling works will meet the requirements set out in the City’s Filling & Excavation Code to ensure safe and responsible management of the land.
    • Stormwater Management: There will be no creation of permanent impervious surfaces, and the area is not within overland flow paths.
    • Heritage and Cultural Considerations: Given the site’s history as an old landfill, we do not expect any disturbance to Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Artefacts.
    • Fire Ants: We have adhered to Biosecurity regulations and have taken steps to mitigate the risk of spreading fire ants, ensuring no permits are needed for material movement within the Biosecurity zone.
  • Vegetation Management / Disturbance to Local Wildlife (noise/increased activity):
    • Native Vegetation: We are not interfering with any native or protected vegetation, and no impact on animal habitats is expected.
    • Koala Habitat: While there is no requirement for a Development Application (DA), we are designing the project to ensure koala movement opportunities and the rehabilitation of any cleared areas.
  • Council Vegetation: If machinery will be working near any council-owned trees, we have obtained Arborist approval and will follow the necessary procedures to minimize any potential impact.
  • Waterways & Coastal Environment:
    • Waterway Impact: The project will not involve any permanent changes to local waterways or create barriers within them.
  • Environmental Nuisance Control:
    • Noise & Vibration: We are committed to adhering to all regulations regarding noise and vibration. Works will be carried out during permissible hours, with noise and vibration mitigation measures included in our Environmental Management Plan (EMP). We will notify residents if any vibration is expected to affect nearby areas.
    • Dust: Measures are in place to control dust, including dampening haul routes and covering stockpiles during high winds or at the end of the workday.
  • Hazardous Substances:
    • Safety Protocols: We will follow best practices for handling hazardous substances. Refuelling of large plant will be done off-site where possible, and spill kits will be available on-site. Any necessary soil stabilisers will be used with appropriate controls in place.

The feedback received from residents was most helpful and has been considered in the final design (see overleaf).  Unfortunately the cost of the bike jump track has increased since consultation.  I will therefore be funding the remaining costs from monies allocated in the upcoming budget.  I will keep you informed as to when the work will commence however can confirm that construction will be undertaken in the 2025/26 financial year.
